iOS Simulator

Simulator apps are ordinary macOS processes, so Puffin can capture them like any other app. It also labels their traffic by simulator device and can install its certificate for you.

Turn on the Simulator option in Settings ▸ Capture (or from the menu bar’s targeting submenu) to capture all simulator apps. Their traffic is labelled with the device name, such as the simulator model, so you can tell devices apart.

A simulator has its own trust store, so it does not trust Puffin’s certificate until you install it.

  1. Boot the simulator.
  2. Open the app’s Simulator section (it also appears as an optional step in Setup & Health while simulators are running). It lists booted simulators and shows which are missing the certificate.
  3. Use the install button to add the certificate to the booted simulators.

Behind the scenes Puffin runs:

Terminal window
xcrun simctl keychain <device-udid> add-root-cert <certificate>

Run it yourself if you prefer. Then add the hosts you want to read to the SSL proxying list, as in HTTPS and the certificate.

  • Restart the app in the simulator after you start capture, because only new connections are claimed.
  • Physical iOS devices are not supported in the first release.
